The Cost of Purity

Rank: Bloodline Purity Officer

Details:

I had been deployed on Elystra to find the unregistered umbric that had been reported. People were concerned that a wild half-blood was loose among the populace. Some witnesses reported seeing scales, which meant a chimeran-umbric. Would need another visit to find its parents, if the parents are even still around.

I checked around the playgrounds, parks, the places that a confused umbric would go. No luck. I figured that the creature must be hungry so I checked the alleys. They usually liked eating vermin. Eventually I found the beast, crouched behind a trash can with a cat in its mouth.

“Hey boss? Is the only option on a chimeran umbric liquidation? Or is my sheet missing something?” said Threxorn

“What? You getting soft? Don't want to put down a crazed beast?” said his partner Kharz “Theres never been any other option for a spilcerspawn.”

“Just seems extreme, the thing was just scared and hungry. But that's the way that it works, I just wanted to make sure.”

Threxorn circles the liquidation and packs up his things to leave for the day, confident in another day of ensuring the bloodline of the Ascendancy is pure, he arrives home to a letter.

Mirnorn Karvek Threxorn, the Genetic Purity Council have approved your application for a wife. Matched by your genetic purity you have been assigned Vorndrake Lithayra, a warden of Tharn Virellian. I hope that your partnership is fruitful and you add to the always growing Ascendancy.

Vorndrake Lithayra will be arriving at your home within the next three days

Varkh Etern

The next three days passed in a blur for Threxorn who had spent the intervening period making his home more welcoming for his new spouse. When he returned home on the third day he saw her standing in front of his door. She had been wearing her uniform, but even through that, Threxorn saw her beauty. They warmly shook hands and did their greetings before he brought Lithayra in and showed her around.

She had brought the marriage certificate with her, already signed and noted by the Genetic Purity Council, all that was left for them both to sign and their union was complete. They both did so without further delay and enjoyed their new lives as a couple within the Ascendancy.

The next several months passed by and they fell deeper and deeper in love, when Lithayra revealed that their union had finally borne the fruit of a new young Colonial for the Varkh Ascendancy. Meanwhile he continued his work for the purification authority.

We had received reports of strange happenings on a harvest world Vexthar Prime, its a psychically resonant world, which means that the more mentally hearty species are specifically kept out there for mining, overseen by colonials.

Arrival in the world was more intense than I expected, I needed to recall my anti-psyker training. But once I reached the town it was as if a protection was being kept around the building. I began asking around but the locals weren’t as helpful, so I decided to investigate this calm that was being created, as the other colonials had been uneasy with this new status quo.

After several days of searching I found the source of the heresy, a young colonial woman had become pregnant by an Elari, giving birth to an umbric. We asked her where the Heretic had gone, she was uncooperative. The child was giving off the aura that shielded the town, an iridite cage prevented its continuation.

The child would be born three months later due to the accelerated birth rate that the Colonials have for their women. Meanwhile, Threxorn had become elated at the possibility of becoming a father, until he got the first blood tests back. They confirmed that the child was his, but due to a variance in the combination of Threxorn and Lithayra’s blood somehow the child would have latent Elari genes. He told Lithayra and they both wept. He had brought home a form from his work earlier that day, he had captured an Elari Umbric at a hospital and put it in the Iridite cells… Would that be the fate of his child? Would someone come for them while they were distracted?

“We need to be quick. Those tests aren't private and every interaction is tracked and verified. The Tharn officers will come first and they won't ask nicely. Pack your things! We will need to leave as soon as we can!” as they began to quickly pack, both heard a knock on the door.

Threxorn answered it and saw that it was Kharz. “Can I help you Kharz?”

“Dont play dumb with me Threxorn…” he looked in and saw that Lithayra was carrying a suitcase. “Planning on going somewhere Threx?”

“Just to celebrate the news! We were planning a trip to Elystra, the Aurum Menagerie supposedly has a new exhibit.” said Lithayra from the back.

Kharz then looked at Threxorn “does she know?”

Threxorn “Yes! I mean No! She knows she's pregnant…”

“So you're just gonna let your wife give birth to a beast and then send it away? You are cold. I figured you'd be leaving town trying to find some way to escape. But you’ve worked in the purity office too long to know that no one ever escapes.” he pats his pistol, clear enough for me to see. “Well, I’ll see you in a couple days then. And if I don't, the Skarn Officers will…”

Threxorn closed the door and collapsed to the floor. When Lithayra stepped out of their room with both bags packed and enough food for a month-long journey. She found Threxorn slowly weeping to himself, she helped him up and to the ship, she set the navigation for Elystra, they would discuss more when they left the atmosphere.

“CHILDREN LITHAYRA! I HUNTED KIDS! Probably terrified kids who wanted nothing more than a life, and what did I do? Threw them in cages, imprisoned their parents… forced them to become soldiers! For What? Purity? They said we were pure! A ‘Perfect Match’ and we make a Strandsplice!”

“Not a Strandsplice! A child! Our child! Will you let a small quirk in her blood change that you are her father?”

He sat there for a few seconds and regained his composure. “No, I have you and together we will raise her, but first, to find a place that will take us in, and Elystra is not the place for that.” He looked at the navigation and tried to find the nearest neutral system. Travel would not be easy in their small ship, it was meant for single galaxy hops not for multi system jumps.

While in the ship they discussed the future, both had seen the Syndicate and what they do with Umbrics which is just a different kind of prison for them. They both agreed that the only solution was to find a Lucent Pact cell. But they are very disparate and some of them don't like any Ascendancy officers let alone defectors from the Ascendancy, the best option would be the Federation, but how to find them. Since the incident on Shadris Vel they were one of the harder factions to find.

So they would head to a known Severed Fold location, Kaelen's Folly, last they both remember the Fold had successfully kicked the Ascendancy off world. While they enjoyed their time together in the cramped quarters they both still felt the stress that this would be their lives for the foreseeable future. Threxorn and Lithayra sat and thought about their families, what would they think, would they understand, could they?
