Summer Camp is almost here! Sort of. How is everyone? Summer Camp homework shaping up? Prep looks like it's coming along nicely. So, have you figured out how you're going to tackle summer camp? That's important, too! Not just maps, or what world, but the 'how'. Will you take it at an even pace? Or savagely attack each prompt, sparing none of them? Somewhere in between works , too! At least for me, pacing for Summer Camp means a lot. For me? I tend to go "Chill". Take my time. Quality over quantity as the saying goes. But it's an important personal choice!

Whew, where did May go? I turned around and now it's June! Which does mean, Summer Camp! Are you going to give it a try? Camp Feral? Camp Chill? ( I'm Camp Chill myself ). No matter what, it's a fun time, and challenging.

Welcome to November, and it'll be a busy one! Unofficial challenges, and then there is Novelember and WorldEmber prep. Which one are you going to tackle? Or is it "all the things"? (Looking at you Camp Feral from Summer Camp. I know all of you are lurking about out there!) No matter which it is, I believe I've got a good mix to help inspire you no matter which challenge you take on!

So, the big question, how's the Reading Challenge coming? There is a ton of entries. How did you approach it? Was it by picking one prompt? A few? I've seen reading challenge lists that seem to tackle this in all sorts of ways. Some pick a few at random prompts in a row to dig into, while others moved in order though the prompts to read. No matter how you go after it, there is no way to lose. There is just so much to read that is downright fun!

 
I tend to pick two prompts from each wave, then read through those lists. When I'm done, I do it again, picking two more prompts from each wave. Still that leaves me so much to read!

 
Speaking of which, it looks like next time will be the 200th issue of "What I'm Reading". How about that? Never thought I'd reach 200! Happy mid-ish July! How's your Summer Camp going? Made it to your goals of Copper, Silver or Diamond? Devoured the prompts? ( looking at you Camp Feral ) No matter your goal, I hope you're having fun with each piece you write. At least for me, that's te best part, getting into the flow and the world. Drawing out that unique vision, with all the special twists and turns.

There are the Spooky campers, Worldwalkers who walk more than one of their worlds for Summer Camp, and the list goes on! Me? I'm a Worldwalker and Camp Chill myself.

Hey, Everybody! Here we go with Issue 172!

 
How goes your February? Worldbuilding coming along? Hopefully, you've made some good progress on your projects! Speaking of worldbuilding, have you added a few items to your own Cabinet of Curiosities? I've seen more appear than I can keep track of! Item articles are a lot of fun to create, aren't they? Which, got me thinking...

 
Item worldbuilding is really decepive in a way, you know? Sure, the goal is an item. A book, sword, pistol, jetpack, or even a nice piece of jewelry. But, items in a setting represent real history. Tiny windows into culture. Sometimes its sweeping ethnicities but what about the culture for a profession like a ship's mechanic or a blacksmith? They're also moments in time that connect to characters and people. Which, really, that's how real history is made. Not so much the sweeping big events, but the small ones. People drive history with what they do... or in this case, what they make. Which, are items!

 
Ah, there I go again. Enough of that, let's get to the fun part, right? So, without further delay!

What I'm Reading! Issue 171

Hey, Everybody! Here we go with Issue 171!

 
How is February going? Back into worldbuiding after some rest? Yep, I'm with you. I'm trying to get my routine back going again, too. But! We have both an official and unofficial challenge to help us along!

 
For the official challenge, it's the "Cabinet of Curiosities". Such a cool name. It's all about the items! Items are, for me, lots of fun but really super hard to make. I self-sabotage so easily and get off on some strange tangent, then realize... wait... that's got nothing to do with an item, that's some 5th son of a warlock despot in a mountain tower... what am I doing here? Then things just get messy. But, I still think they are fun to write. Are you going to try it? I will (carefully!) write a few.

 
Now, for the unofficial one... there is Duckuary! ( Take a look! ). To be fair, lots of unofficial challenges pop up all over the place sometimes. I look for them but seem to miss several until they are almost over. But this one I saw so give it a try! It looks absolutely hilarious.

 
Anyway, I'm babbling again! Let's get to it, right? So, without further delay!

What I'm Reading! Issue 170

Hey, Everybody! Here we go with Issue 170!

 
How goes January? I hope 2024 is playing nice so far. Since January is coming to a close, I do want to ask, have you done the reading challenge? That was is always a good time to fuel the old imagination, am I right? Always good to read and learn a few things from other Worldbuilding. But also, it's just good to wandering in another world for awhile.

 
Today, I'm feeling a bit chatty. Maybe it's because this is issue 170 on this long digital road? I don't know. So if you like, sit a spell. If not, well, what you're looking for is a bit farther down.

 
Did you make it to the WorldEmber Awards stream? That was fun. But, I do feel like they left someone off. Someone who, from my small point of view, came out of WorldEmber with a fantastic achievement. Maybe one of the best. Who was missed?

I can already hear the "Kummer Wolfe, now wait a minute, I didn't..." but no, no. Hear me out. Because oh, yes you did. Set that whole wordcount aside. No matter how many words maybe it was just one article. Perhaps it was only one piece of art or a single map. You created something that wasn't there before and handed it to the world. Something new. An idea. A new piece of content that someone, having the worst day of the year, saw and it made them smile. You gave that person hope.

 
Even if that person was you, and that hope helped you grow.

 
So take a moment and look back at Past You. Show them what you made, that it's possble to give imagination wings. That, yes, it can be done. That you created something that only You could make.

 
Now? Do it again.

 
Worldbuilding is climbing a mountain. We're carrying our Hammer and Anvils while we climb, so it can get a bit heavy. But you know what? We're still climbing.

So how is January treating you? Still working on the Reading / New Year's Resolution challenge? Or have you finished and you're back to worldbuilding after a good, post-WorldEmber rest? Me, I'm working on the worldbuilding part. It's a bit icy outside where I am, so it's a perfect time to grab a hot drink and worldbuild, right?

 
If you've tackled the challenge, you had to narrow it down. So, whch ones didn't make your top 10 or top 8 but were just so very close? Or was there one that just blew you away with the depth? Was there one that stood out that just fueled the fire right up and you got to worldbuilding right away?

 
It does happen that way sometimes.

 
Ah, but enough of that. As I've been trying to stay out of the zero to sub-zero icy weather, I've also tried to catch up on my reading. So, without further delay!

What I'm Reading! Issue 168

Hey, Everybody! Here we go with Issue 168!

 
So! How is the reading challenge coming along? Did you narrow down your list to five or ten? Pretty tough to do that, there are just so many that are amazing to read. Then there are the New Year's Resolutions. Those are a challenge all by themselves. But, never forget, those resolutions are really more like a guideline. Signposts to light the way, not hard and fast rules. At least, for me that's how they work. They work better for me that way.

 
As for the reading challenge, what you found so far? I know there has to be something fascinating you've found already. Some gem that caught your eye. What was it? A certain type of article? A whole world perhaps?

 
That can happen. When it does, you'll find you've spent hours delighting in another's imagination. Kind of refreshing in a way. Don't forget to let the author know you liked what you read! After all, it never hurts to pass on hope an a smile. That fuels the breathtaking flowers of imagination!

 
But here I go rambling again. While I've been keeping an eye on my guidelines for the year, I've also tried to catch up on my reading. So, without further delay!

What I'm Reading! Issue 166

Hey, Everybody! Here we go with Issue 166!

 
Well! We made it to the end of 2023 and the end of WorldEmber! Still working out that last article? I know I am. But, if we don't squeeze out one more, hey, that's ok. It's just a good foundation to expand that world... or worlds... you might be working on.

 
Looking back, I've a question. Just something to think about. See, sometimes we get in a hurry to move forward to tomorrow... we might miss today or the great things we did before. Worldbuilding and other things we have done that are quietly inspiring us, and we may not even realize it!

 
So. Take a moment and look back. What worldbuilding are you proud of? I mean the kind you look at and think "oh yeah, I created that and it's awesome!" It's worth stopping for just a moment and trying it. Especially on the last day of the year, and of WorldEmber. You never know, you might discover something special that can motivate you to amazing new work in 2024. I know I just did that and honestly, I surprised myself. Give it a try.

 
But while I've been working through those last words for WorldEmber, I've also tried to catch up on my reading believe it or not. So, without further delay!

What I'm Reading! Issue 165

I certainly didn't expect this ( ... because WorldEmber, right? ... ) but this seems like a Happy Holidays issue! How about that? So, how is WorldEmber going? How much of your plan have you knocked down? Or... did you throw away the plan and went where the worldbuilding winds took you?

 
Or... Both? Both. Both is good!

 
Me? I've been working on my own plans for WorldEmber, chipping away slowly. My own WorldEmber homework... well, it's more of a guideline, but I'm getting there.

 
But, from what I can see, WorldEmber has been amazing as always. Worlds are growing, imagination is just flowing like water! There are worlds for manuscripts, stories, comics, gaming campaigns... all being filled out. Then there are those that exist because they can... and should! They are a story to explore on their own.

 
Which is why I've also tried to catch up on my reading... because there is plenty to read! So, without further delay!

Hey, Everybody! Here we go with Issue 161!

 
Last week before WorldEmber! Are you excited? Nervous? Warming up that keyboard? As for me, I've done the homework, prepped, gotten organized... and am about as ready as I can be! I've seen a ton of homework planning with a lot of ways to get organized. This should be an amazing WorldEmber!

 
But aren't they always? After all, its a great way to stretch and challenge yourself. Exercise for the imagination, which is always a good thing. But remember to pace yourself. It's a challenge against yourself!

 
That aside, while I've prepped, I've also tried to catch up on my reading. So, without further delay!

WorldEmber is getting close now! How is that homework coming along? I have to admit, I need to catch up and put up my own Week 3! But we're almost to the end and right up on WorldEmber. Are you looking forward to it? Got your stubs and plan ready?

 
I've read so many of them, I can tell it'll be a fantastic WorldEmber this year. Already, I think I'm going to have a very hard time narrowing down to what I read and liked the most! But that's a good challenge to have. Just a sign that there is so much bright imagination and content there for inspiration.

Wow, November is a busy month, isn't it?

 
So, how's the homework coming? Got week 2 tackled yet? I'm still working out my week 2 today. Looking forward to week 3? But, I understand if you're focused on NaNoWriMo. That one is a MONSTER. I tried it once and whew.. yes. I know what you're going through. My hat is off to you! Then there is Mapvember? Anyone giving that a try? There are more, I've seen a few other unofficial challenges crop up. Are you trying any on for size?

 
One thing, I'm wondering, is how many unofficial challenges will crop up during WorldEmber? They are always amazing and fun to try and do seem to blend in well with WorldEmber, of course!

There is also Mapvember! Who is giving that a try? And let's not ever forget... NaNoWriMo! EVer tried it? I have and to be fair, it is a rush and a half. It also isn't something to take lightly. Like WorldEmber, it can really challenge you. Give you rich ground to flex the writing and imagination muscles.

Reading is another good way to prep. Inspiration is a well and really it's a good idea to let it refill. Which means read! Fuel that imagination! Which is exactly what I've been doing. (Plus its a great way to unwind!)
